Virtual Field Trips

Leveraging onboard video conferencing capabilities, scientists inside Aquarius and on the adjacent reefs are able to engage audiences worldwide, through interactive classes and other live programming.

At FIU, researchers are able to teach classes from the depths of the ocean from both inside Aquarius and from their coral reef study sites. We currently offer virtual field trips through  Microsoft Skype in the Classrooman online community that enables thousands of teachers to inspire the next generation  through transformative learning using Skype.

Aquanauts facilitate a virtual field trip.

Since 2013, our virtual field trips have reached over 1 million students in more than 35 countries. To get a glimpse of our global reach take a look at our virtual field trip map.

Virtual field trip opportunities from inside Aquarius are only offered during missions, which occur at selected times of the year and are accommodated on a first-come, first-serve basis.

While we can't always offer virtual field trips live from Aquarius, we do always offer land-based virtual field trips. Land-based virtual field trips are currently scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

To schedule your virtual field trip visit the Skype in the Classroom website. You will need to fill out a form on Skype for "Journey to Aquarius" if you are interested in scheduling a virtual field trip during Aquarius missions.
